Hey there, family wranglers!
If you’ve ever thought about gathering everyone—grandparents, siblings, cousins, kids, and even your third cousin twice removed—for a big family photoshoot, you probably
had one of two thoughts:
Let me tell you: it can be both. But mostly, it’s an incredible way to create memories that will make you smile for years (and maybe laugh when you look back at the chaos). As a photographer who’s captured her fair share of big family dynamics, I’ve got you covered with tips, tricks, and ideas to make your multi-family photoshoot not just beautiful, but actually enjoyable.
Let’s be real: getting everyone together in the same place at the same time feels like a small miracle. Schedules, distance, and life can make it tough, but that’s exactly why a multi-family photoshoot is so special.
These photos capture a slice of family history—generations coming together, kids growing up, and relationships that tell a story. Plus, they’re amazing for holiday cards, gifts, and decorating that blank wall in Grandma’s living room.
Wrangling one family for a photoshoot is a feat. Wrangling multiple families? That’s where a little planning (and a lot of patience) comes in.
Every big family has at least one person who’s a natural planner. Put them in charge of scheduling, coordinating outfits, and keeping everyone on track. Bonus points if they’re good at rallying kids and calming stressed parents.
Gone are the days of everyone in matching white shirts and jeans (thank goodness!). Instead, pick a color palette—think earthy tones, pastels, or jewel tones—and let each family interpret it their own way. This creates a cohesive look without feeling too forced.
Got little kids in the mix? Plan your session around nap times and snack breaks. Working with teens? Avoid early mornings at all costs (trust me on this one).
Kick things off with a “Generations” shot: grandparents, parents, and kids all together. It’s a classic, timeless image that every family will cherish.
If you’ve got adult siblings in the group, let’s get a playful shot! Think piggyback rides, exaggerated hugs, or everyone pointing at “the favorite.” (Every family has one, right?)
Let the cousins take center stage for a moment. Whether they’re playing, laughing, or showing off their coolest poses, cousin photos are pure gold.
Breaking down into smaller groups—each family within the extended family—makes it easier to capture individual personalities. It’s also great for keeping the chaos contained!
Sometimes the best shots happen when no one’s looking at the camera. Encourage natural interactions—grandma sharing a story, kids playing tag, or siblings laughing at an inside joke. These are the moments that really tell the story of your family.
Deciding between a studio or an outdoor location depends on your family’s vibe.
As your photographer, my goal is to capture the love and connection in your family—whether that’s in perfectly posed shots or spontaneous moments. I’ll help guide the session, keep things fun, and make sure everyone (yes, even grumpy Uncle Bob) feels comfortable in front of the camera.
Multi-family photoshoots might seem like a lot to take on, but the end result is worth every bit of effort. These are the photos that will be passed down, the ones that spark stories, and the ones that remind you just how lucky you are to have each other—chaos and all.
So, what do you think? Are you ready to get the whole gang together? Whether you’re planning a studio session or an outdoor adventure, let’s make it happen.
