I’m Lisa, a photographer in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I’ve seen it all—pets that pose better than their owners and others that… well, let’s just say they didn’t get the memo. So, if you’re considering bringing your fur-baby along, let’s make sure it’s an experience you’ll treasure and not a chase-through-the-park catastrophe.
Before we dive into the details of posing and preparation, let’s set some realistic expectations. Not every pet is ready for a modeling gig, and that’s okay! But to make sure we get the best photos possible, it’s important to consider a few things:
Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s decide where this family photoshoot should take place.
Studio Sessions – If your pet is comfortable with indoor spaces and isn’t too easily distracted, a studio session could be the perfect fit. It’s a controlled environment, there are no squirrels to chase (sadly, for your dog), and we can work with lighting to get the most flattering shots. Bonus: It’s rain-proof! But remember, the studio space is cozy, so if your pet is like a bull in a china shop, this may not be the best fit.
Outdoor Sessions – If your pet’s a free spirit who loves running, playing, and exploring, then an outdoor shoot is probably more their style. The Bay Area is full of incredible pet-friendly locations, from beaches to parks. Whether your dog’s the type who thrives with a wide-open space or prefers a quiet trail, we’ll find a spot that fits their vibe. Just remember—if your pup has a tendency to zoom off and leave you in the dust, we’ll need a solid plan (and maybe a long leash).
So, you’ve decided your pet is photogenic material—awesome! But a little preparation goes a long way in making the session run smoothly.
Exercise Beforehand – Tired pets are happy pets! Give them a good walk or play session before the shoot so they arrive with a little less energy. This way, they’re more likely to stay focused (and maybe even pose like a pro!).
Dress Them Up or Keep It Simple – Want to throw a cute bow tie or bandana on your pet? Go for it! But if that’s not their style, no worries—natural is always best. Just like with people, it’s about capturing their personality, so whatever feels right for your pet is perfect for me.
This Is For:
This Isn’t For (And That’s Okay!):
Remember, not every pet is a perfect fit for a photoshoot, and that’s okay. If you think your pet might need some extra support, let’s chat about it and find the best approach for everyone involved.
Including your pet in your family photos can be an absolute blast, and the photos themselves? Unforgettable. But like anything involving animals, flexibility is key. I’m here to make the experience as smooth (and fun!) as possible, whether your furry friend is a pro model or needs a bit of coaxing with some tasty treats.
So, if you’re thinking about bringing your pet to your next family photoshoot in the San Francisco Bay Area, give me a shout. Let’s chat about what will work best for your furry friend, your family, and the photos you’ll treasure forever.
