Senior year flies by faster than anyone expects. Between sports, school events, college apps, and weekend plans, it can feel like there’s hardly a minute to spare. So when families ask me, “When should we schedule senior photos?” my answer is always the same: As soon as possible.
While you can technically take senior photos year-round, the absolute best time for portraits in the San Francisco Bay Area is between September and October. Early fall brings longer days, warm weather, and that signature dreamy light we all love.
It’s also the start of the school year, when schedules are still relatively calm and your teen isn’t buried in homework or college apps just yet. By getting portraits done in those first few weeks, you’ll avoid the stress of late fall and enjoy a smoother, more relaxed experience.
Even though September and October are ideal for senior portraits, those months fill up fast. Planning ahead gives you the best shot at locking in golden light, ideal weather, and a time that fits your teen’s busy schedule. Here’s why early planning is key:
There’s no denying that early fall gives us some of the most gorgeous light and cozy vibes for senior portraits. Warm tones, golden hour glow, and just the right amount of breeze in the air. It’s a dream.
But here’s the truth: Bay Area weather turns quickly. By November, we’re often dealing with cloudy skies, chilly temps, and unpredictable conditions that can throw a wrench in outdoor shoots. If your teen has a particular look or location in mind, we want to capture it before the scenery or the weather changes.
Those dreamy golden hour shots don’t last forever. Once daylight saving time ends, our windows for that soft, golden light shrink dramatically. That means less flexibility for after-school sessions and tighter scheduling overall. Booking your senior photo session earlier in the fall gives us the light, the warmth, and the time to make your teen’s vision come to life, whether that’s beachy, woodsy, urban, or anything in between.
Another reason to schedule early? Senior year is packed. Between extracurriculars, college deadlines, and all the “lasts” of high school, finding time for a full photo session (plus outfit planning and prep) gets trickier the longer you wait.
Checking senior portraits off the list early means fewer stress points later. You’ll have beautiful photos ready for graduation announcements, yearbooks, and proud social media shares, without the last-minute scramble.
Whether your senior is dreaming of a golden field, city skyline, or something totally unique, timing really is everything. I always recommend reaching out early in the school year, or even over the summer, to get on your photographer’s calendar. Popular dates go quickly, especially in the fall.
